African Universal Wagon Barn Find

Tags:

After 90+ days and 14,587.64 miles at sea our Zimbabwe barn find Universal Wagon is gently eased out of the container. The engine was lashed to a stand behind the wagon during the voyage. Despite minimal efforts to secure the rolling chassis, no damage was incurred during the trip. Frozen rear brakes no doubt helped.
Barn find 230S IMA Universal Wagon
African workhorse will run again.
It began with an innocuous email on August 19, 2011 that read, “Have 230SE Fintail Wagon, 1966, RHD, 2 Tone silver grey, Grey upholstery Orig A/C, Twin carb . In Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Has been in storage for 12 yrs, but immediately runner. Can be shipped in 6 M container ex Durban RSA. Buyer to arrange and pay ocean freight etc.” While I was very pleased to be offered an exceptionally rare IMA 230S Universal wagon, the notion of extracting it from Bulawayo seemed to be a non-starter.
Purchased near Bulawayo, Zimbabwe during the early ’70s from an nickel mine employee by the now 76 yo M.D of a paving company, Mr Alan G-W, this 230S provided safe motoring over primitive gravel roads to inspect airfields under construction throughout the country. The wagon replaced Mr. G-W’s 230.6 114 chassis sedan as it was “too skittish on loose gravel” with its narrower track and 14″ wheels. The stout Belgium built S-class wagon with its heavy duty suspension and 15″ wheels served him well for many years.
“Summing all the shipping fees excluding US import fees brings us to a mere $9,930.85 to transport the fin to sunny California, and certainly a better life compared to her probable fate in ZM. Total distance traveled? 14,587.64 miles.”
Pushed off the road by a local registration issue, Mr. G-W’s cherished wagon saw little use for some years. Prior to placement in a container 12 years ago to survive the region’s torrential rains, this two-tone fin was ‘on the button’ and according to Mr. G-W, “The engine runs like a sewing machine and attains full oil pressure as soon as the starter is engaged.” In a week or so we’ll have a chance to see just how his cherished ‘Silver Bullet’ runs once engine is reunited with chassis.

Ultra-rare Universal 230S was constructed by IMA S.A in Belgium and features heavy duty rear suspension, 15" wheels and Boge Hydromat compensator (now replaced with a 5th spring). Our African fin is also fitted with a front skid plate, Euro headlamps and period AC. Fantastic! Note RHD configuration.
14,587 mile odyessy
How does one get a fintail wagon from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe to Oakland, CA? It’s a cinch: You first remove the engine from the car enabling shipment as “Mercedes-Benz body only plus one Mercedes-Benz engine” to avoid import/export issues and costs within Africa, and secure these items in a 20′ container. Next, load the container on a rail car for the 887 mile ride to the port of Durban, South Africa. The container then hangs around the port waiting for a ship to…China. After completing this 5,244 mile leg to China aboard the Melissa, the container hangs around waiting to hitch a ride to California, in this case aboard the Altair. Oakland, CA is now just 8,457 miles away.

Suspicious about the contents of the container, Customs agents in Oakland, Ca demanded an ‘Intensive Inspection’ in addition to the standard scan. Satisfied the tatty fintail wagon posed no security threat to the US, agents released the container. This exercise cost me an additional $970.20.
What did this odyessy cost? Summing all the shipping fees excluding US import fees brings us to a mere $9,930.85 to transport the fin to sunny California, and certainly a better life compared to her probable fate in ZM. Total distance traveled? 14,587.64 miles.

African wagon's interior is intact but with generic materials having replaced original seat trim and carpets. Note period underdash AC, ivory steering wheel and Becker Grand Prix radio. A forensic study will determine original interior color - we see some red beneath dyed door panels - and exterior color. Our preliminary inspection reveals a complete car sans one wheel cover, the spare tire cover and tools.

The Universal's VIN plate seems to have been issued by IMA. Text is in both French and Dutch. ID number is unique to the wagon and bears little resemblance to typical 111 series ID number. This fin is a 111.001 series Mercedes-Benz.

The datacard seems to have been issued by IMA as well and reveals little information about paint, trim, accessories etc. Engine number is noted by 'see below' and we haven't been able to fully translate the notation under paintwork (lackierung). Text in the upper left corner is IMA's address in Belgium. It's all very intriguing.
Back on the road soon
Our plan is to return Mr. G-W’s Universal wagon to the road. Of course, the first step will be to install the engine but we’ll likely take advantage of the engine being out and renew the clutch assy, replace engine seals, install fresh water pump/belts/hoses, renew ignition components and have a look at the Zenith carbs. All brakes will have to be refreshed and all fluids changed. Once back on the road, we’ll put together an in depth look at this most interesting 230S.

Now safely in the MercedesHeritage.com headquarters after its 14,500 mile trip, our cool fin wagon will soon be back on the road. Installing the engine and attending to most ancillary systems should have her up and running by mid-July. Stay tuned for further reports.

The color code looks like badly spelled steel grey and gold tutone(OT/UT) . Almost similar to what it has already ,silver instead of gold?or possibly a gold roof?
I have friend who has a W112 300SE with the Africa pack wheels,15″ and full hubcaps.

    Hello
    According to Datenkarte;
Lackierung; Blecht. roh geölt (Blechtafel roh geölt)
can be translated to; blank Sheets oiled
This is the reason why not very much IMA survived as Daimler mostly shipped unpainted rolling Chassis to Belgium (According to the CKD Rules which forced to ship “bare” chassis). Evan a decade later when IMA´s follow up built SAAB you could tell a SAAB 900 Production factory just by the rust on The body. While Saab from sweden did rust in the structure the Belgium built Version did rust in the Roofpanel.
For more Details on IMA and Chassis you might contact Mr Schubert at A I Motors in germany as he owns one from the last made bare Chassis (And several Special Body versions like a “overlong” Binz Ambulance or a 6 Door W112)
Shipping cars from Central Africa states can be made easier. Just bring the car to the local mechanic (fitter) and have it fixed up for the trip down to South Africa.
Tell him you want a cheap dependable Runner for just doing vacation and the sell it off later. (If you start telling you will ship the car he either thinks you are nuts or just rises the price as it is a collectors item and those are more expensive then average cars) Most fitters do solid work as long finish isn’t an issue.
Don´t care for rust if there is any make sure it is visible like on typical african beater cars.
SA is used to ship cars to Europe or ROW and doesn´t need as much bribery as the central african states (However money in the right “Spots” lubricates the system for a smooth and fast transaction and keeps the thieves form the container)
But it is always the best to remove the expensive parts and ship them separate things like Radios, Steering wheels, Headlights, rear lights fit into a suitcase and can be shipped with the own luggage. However on IMA´s every piece of trim from the IMA section is unobtainium starting with the trim vom the rain gutters.
A funny thing is in the late 80´s when the dollar dropped we flew to the US to find IMA´s and ship them back to Germany. Most from the looked as “good” as your african survivor and most from the never hat a regular service since they arrived somehow in the US. This seems usual in uncivilised 3rd world countrys.

Great to see your new wagon! Most unusual to have a bench front seat, and nice to see no visible rust….The two-tone paint is surely an afterthought;given the hint of an originally red interior, the car could have been all silver,or maybe graphite grey? The Becker Grand Prix radio is worth its weight in gold nowadays. My 230 Universal is in the throes of a complete floor replacement,as well as rocker panels.Fortunately I bought all the parts years ago while I was still employed at the mercedes dealership that was my “home’ for 43 years!Keep up the good work with the the website;I love it!

    To All.
Thanks for all the excellent information. This is our first Universal and any information is welcome. We’ll be carefully inspecting the car to learn more about its construction and immediate needs.
The reasons for taking a chance and buying in Zimbabwe were many-fold: not many are on the market, the seller was a charming fellow, the car has a compelling history and I thought the story would make an excellent read. So far so good! Not to mention the fact that, as per the seller, were it left in Africa it would have been driven into the ground and lost forever.

I was just in Bulawayo last year Zimbabwe in in such poor shape, with their inflation over 2000%. And the roads are substandard. I’m glad you got this “survivor” out – have fun with it. -Jeff
