1966 Mercedes Benz 230S Universal Station Wagon in Wicklow, Ireland
1966 Mercedes Benz 230S Universal Station Wagon
This 1966 Mercedes Benz 230S Universal is a rare right-hand-drive wagon that is said to have been stored for the last six years. The seller has had the car for 15 years and it once had a diesel engine. Find it here on eBay.UK in Wicklow, Ireland for 7000 GBP. Special thanks to BaT reader Nathan R. for this submission!
……You pulled the words right off of my keyboard. I totally agree.
Sun scorched upholstery on the seats…. in Ireland… now that is a stretch, unless there was someone’s front window pane reflecting like a lens for so many years where it parked.
Keep as is, dry it out, drive it like stink.
Slainte’.
I have a handful of these Universals (230S’s) and these cars are becoming rare, at least complete ones.
To me the 230 is not as appealing as the 230S, especially not RHD (No offense, I am a LHD kinda guy).
The listing doesn’t show anything in detail to really know what the car is offering. Worthless photos and almost as worthless description – vague enough to read anything into it. Is it drivable?
Too much trouble and headache for the money he wants.
I just bought one 10 months ago (230S estate, honestly rusted almost to the ground) for less than £1000 but had to be shipped to the US in a Container – what a nightmare (and £1,800 more).
If I could drive this one away without problems, I’d maybe consider it……….. a weekend in Ireland and drive to the ferry in a Universal (?)…….

To have a RHD in let’s say US is a personal ‘luxury’ not everybody cares for.
They never look under the car and don’t suspect anything ’til it’s obvious and obviously too late.
Since I know these wagons very well there are two issues: the common rust in wet climates which comes from the bottom up. Secondly the inadequate fusion of panels and rustproofing of especially these “Universal’ wagons, which makes them rust from the inside out in some cases.
Although this seems an unusual color it may be original or an older repaint.
The lack of description suggests as mention a careful inspection. Who knows what lurks under that paint.
This example looks very humble, but has potential.
Ask me how I know about these rust issues………
